  • Only 6 % of sport science research focuses on female athletes

The team at SYNRGY have partnered with Training Peaks to provide a bespoke cycling coaching service that specifically focuses on optimising training around the nuances of female physiology. In our latest blog Synergy share their findings.

    Tracking Your Cycle:

If you track your menstrual cycle using apps such as Wild AI, often clear windows of opportunity start to emerge.

The Follicular phase is a low hormone phase during which the body is generally primed to take on stress and adapts well to hard training. This is a great time to do harder and/or high intensity workouts and heavy resistance training. Fuel wise,  the body is primed to access stored carbohydrates, which is exactly the fuel you need for high intensity sessions.

Conversely, during the luteal (high hormone) phase, when oestrogen and progesterone start to rise, the female body becomes less resilient to training stress, the immune system is compromised and stored glycogen is less readily available. So, these few days are usually best spent at relatively low intensity (i.e. endurance riding). And during this phase the body is also in more of a “breakdown” state, so, it’s important to aim for 30 grams of leucine protein per meal and immediately post exercise.

If you can generally structure your hard workouts to coincide with the days you feel invincible and your easy workouts when you are feeling a little low, you are one step closer to elevating your cycling performance to the next level! The key here is tracking, being methodical and remaining consistent.

    Oral Contraceptives?

Interestingly, we have also found that women on the pill have had great success when tracking their artificial cycles. In some ways it’s even more important to do so, given that fluctuations in energy levels and rate of perceived exertion are somewhat less predictable and comparable versus women who are naturally cycling. But the principle remains the same, try and seek out those days where you feel great, and use them to your advantage!

    Training Around the Menopause

What stage of life you are in also dramatically impacts the training plan you should be pursuing. For example, menopausal women experience a decrease in lean muscle mass, decrease in VO2max and reduction in bone density (a woman’s bone density can decline up to 20% in the years following menopause). Powers of recovery fade and it becomes difficult to maintain a low body fat %.

What’s more, menopausal women’s bodies become more resistant to training stimuli as hormone levels decline; i.e., they have to train at a higher intensity to get the same training stimuli vs younger women.  As a result, they need specialised training and nutrition guidance.

In particular, and contrary to popular belief, older female athletes should spend significant chunks of training time doing short, very hard explosive drills. These high intensity sessions, such as maximum 10 second sprints, help stimulate growth hormone and combat muscle and bone density loss.

Likewise, a complimentary gym program should be structured around cycling sessions. Veteran female cyclists should be doing heavy, high impact weight exercises- these will again help slow muscle degradation and bolster bone density.

With regards to nutrition, it’s important to have a higher intake of protein after exercise. Due to the fluctuation and decline of female sex hormones during the peri and post-menopausal years, protein can help the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis, a role which previously would have been played by oestrogen. It has also been noted that an increase in protein is essential for veteran female athletes to gain equivalent training adaptations to younger counterparts .

As a rough guideline, it is recommended that women aim for 1.7 – 2.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. In menopause it is recommended that you aim for the higher end of that range (2.3 – 2.4 grams per kilogram per day) on heavy training days and towards the lower end on your easy days.

    We Are Here to Help!

SYNRGY have an experienced, all female, world tour pro coaching team provide bespoke training plans for whatever stage of life you are in.  Together with their partners at Training Peaks, they can ensure that you are fully supported, with daily contact, inspiration and motivation for making the most of your menstrual cycle in order to achieve peak performance.

  • 2023 New Arrivals: Basso Bikes

In our 2023 New Arrivals blog series we’ll take a look at the new product launched by our brand partners. We cut through the marketing smoke & mirrors and tell you what we really think. We can do this because we are independent (we work with many brands) and we test ride all of the products we talk about in our rental and demo fleets.

There is so much we love about Basso bikes. For a start they are one of the few Italian brands that is still owned by the founder (Alcide) & run by his family (wife Lucia & son’s Alessandro & Leonardo). Secondly, they are one of the only Italian brands still manufacturing bikes in Italy. When we visit the Basso bikes office in Treviso, Italy, we also visit the factory.

But there is an even bigger reason why we love Basso. They come out with so much new product and bike innovation, it makes Specialized look like a bystander. We’re serious, for a small Italian brand to bring out four new models in 2023 while other brands simply slap on a new colour, that’s impressive, let’s take a look at them.

The all new 2023 Basso Astra All-Road Bike

Talk about moving with the times. When we first heard of the Astra becoming an all-road bike we nearly fell off our chair. It’s exactly what we need for our Girona and Málaga bike rental fleets. With clearance for a 35 mm tyre, this is enough to still enjoy the fast road sections but also dive off onto a track and explore the countryside. Tyre choice is obviously important here, we will go with the widest possible low tread tyre to ensure minimal rolling resistance on the road but maximum comfort off road.

The second feature of the 2023 All-Road Astra we love is the integration of all the cables. It now looks like a €10k bike for half the price. It’s got smooth lines and as always sexy colours to choose from. If you want one bike for all your riding this should be a serious contender in 2023.

    Basso Astra Disc Road Bike
Can a racing bicycle be versatile and performing at the same time?

The new 2023 Basso Diamante Climbing Bike

The elephant in the room with the Basso Diamante always was its weight. It always had the looks and handled amazingly, but it was the slightly heavier weight with comparatively priced models which put people off the bike.

In its eighth evolution Basso engineers have shaved off 200 grams from the frame which may not sound like a lot but we know it’s possible to build a 6.8 kg bike with the frame. That’s light!

If you like a high performance but stable geometry the Basso Diamante is your bike. It gives so much confidence on the descents we literally select it for our high end rental fleet so less people fall off and damage the bike!

    Basso-Diamante-SV-Ultegra-Aurora
Diamante is devoted to the slopes, to the differences in height, to the most rugged climbs.

    The Basso Palta Gravel Bike

Ok, so officially this bike came out in 2022 but we can’t help but include it. The Palta is so popular it became a brand in its own right. Now it is one of the gravel bikes of choice in and around Girona again achieving high performance and comfortable geometry.

The Basso Palta is born from aggressive, race geometry but the latest model has evolved to a much more versatile machine – now just a ready for bikepacking adventure as it is for race-day.

The proof that exploration is better with adrenaline and speed.

    The Vega Gravel Electric Bike

The Volta is Basso´s high end carbon electric gravel bike but it comes at a price. So the Vega gravel is an introduction to the same technology at an affordable price point. With a massive 500 Wh battery this bike goes as far and hard as you need it to. And 17.8 kg isn´t all that bad considering it is an alloy frame and the size of the battery and motor.

    Vega Gravel e-bike
A bicycle that makes gravel accessible to every cyclist.

The best way to get to know the brand is to ride the bikes. You can’t test ride these stunning bikes at our cycling hubs in Girona or Málaga. Head over to our Bike Hire page to book your ride!

  • Best Summer Cycling Jersey’s for Cycling in Girona

Yes. We know it’s hot.  Stinking hot here in Spain. We set our alarms a little earlier, slip out on the bike before the mercury has risen, but still, we need the right equipment to get us through longer days.  Jersey choice is so important to keeping you temperature regulated in the summer weather, and luckily the technology these days is phenomenal. The brands have put a lot of time and effort into R and D , from pro testing, to fabric development, and we’ve gotten to try a lot of them first hand.

There’s a lot of different facets that make a jersey ideal for summer riding.  With so many choices on the market we’ve broken down some of the key elements for you to help guide you on your selection process.

    Summer Cycling Jerseys: Features

Mesh Paneling: Although almost all jerseys will have solid front fabrics, look out for mesh paneling on the back, side and sometimes even sleeves.  The side is a popular option as too much mesh on the back can lead to sun exposure during long hours. If it isn’t mesh, a perforated fabric with essentially tiny holes in it is sometimes used to aid breathability without sacrificing opacity.  A lot of these new fabrics, both mesh and opaque, include a moisture wicking quality to keep the air flowing in and out and pull the sweat away from you.

Low Profile Neckline: A traditional, classic cycling jersey has a zipper top that pulls right up onto the neck, and a collar that sits just below the Adam’s apple.  Now we are starting to see more summer jerseys with a lower collarless style, the top grazing the apex of the sternum. Although the higher neckline can provide more sun protection and absorbs sweat, the lower “aero jersey” style finish removes extra fabric for simply less coverage.

UPF Fabric: It’s no replacement for sunblock (every day!) but UPF treated fabric offers an extra layer of sun exposure protection, built in at manufacturing level.  If you live in a place with strong sun, this fabric is a great option to keep you from sunburning through your kit.

Grippers: Or lack thereof sometimes… Often silicone or rubber gripper “tape” is used in jerseys around the waistband and arms to keep everything in place whilst riding. The waist never seems to cause issues, as it normally sits against the shorts, but on the hottest days sometimes a rubber grip can be uncomfortable.  Look for microdot grips or seamless raw sleeves that don’t use a band.  Sometimes the sleeves run snugger when raw edged as something to note.

Pockets: Pockets are ideal. The classic cycling jersey has 3 back pockets, and often some have an extra zip stash for valuables.  Just note the material and density of the pockets, as they can trap heat, so if you think you don’t use them, opt for a jersey with a low profile set up with its storage.

Zipper: Sometimes you just have to open it up. Look for full zip jerseys, if you need to air it all out on those hot days.  Some jerseys have just half length zips, some these days have none at all, but for the safest bet for summer, always look for a full length opening option.

Eat Sleep Cycle Summer Pink Jersey

Best Summer Cycling Jersey’s for Cycling in Girona

Honeycomb mesh sleeves paired with ultra-soft knitted Italian fabrics increase airflow and comfort during your rides. Reflective graphics allow 360 degree visibility no matter the conditions, and SPF50+ sun protection provides an extra layer of coverage for those long days in the saddle.

PedALED Mirai Jersey (Men’s and Women’s)

The PedALED Mirai Jersey is built from square one for intense training on hot days. A lightweight summer cycling jersey crafted  with mesh side panels to help riders stay cool in the heat of the season, and made from a performance polyester/elastane blend, this fabric is ideal for high-intensity activities in warm weather conditions.

    Tactic HQ Jersey

  • Bikes of the World Tour 2022

We love nothing more than checking out the latest bikes being raced by the pro peleton, especially when they are bikes made by brands we’re proud to partner with. No less than 6 of bike brands we stock & sell in our Girona store are World Tour team sponsors. In this blog we compare the bikes on offer & share our insights into which bikes you, our customers, are most excited about.

    Jumbo-Visma (TJV) – Cervélo R5 / S5 / Caledonia

With lead riders like Vos, Van Aert & Roglic & super-domestiques like Laporte, Vingegaard & Gesink, Cervélo bikes have already been ridden to multiple victories this season. Marc Hirsche put the S5 in the spotlight with his epic solo breakaway on Stage 9 of the 2020 Tour de France for Team Sunweb. Since then S5 sales have taken off in our shop. The release of the new R5 brings the tech in line with the price point. The 4th edition of the bike has fully integrated cabling & uber-clean lines. As a top of the line climbing bike the R5 of course flys up mountains but what Cervélo say differentiates the bike is it’s unmatched poise & handling on the descents. All eyes on Roglic & the R5 in the 2022 Tour de France!

Jumbo-Visma have their Cervélo’s built with the new Shimano Dura Ace Di2 12 speed.

    UAE Team Emirates (UAD) – Colnago V3Rs / Concept / C64

Perhaps the biggest rivals this year to Jumbo Visma at the Tour de France, UAE Team Emirates are likewise racking up their victories on their Colnago bikes. The most popular bike on the team, & the bike of choice of superstar Pojacar, is the Colnago V3Rs. However, with rumours flying around the bike industry about an update to the iconic C64, we’ll have to wait & see which bike will dominte the 2022 Tour de France.

The V3 is a top seller at Eat Sleep Cycle. It’s a beautifully made bike & sister machine to the V3Rs, a perfect bike for us mortal cyclists who want all the benefits of the V3 & don’t notice a few grams extra on the weight of the frame.

UAE’s Colnago bikes are built with (what else) Campagnolo Super Record EPS.

Lotto-Soudal (LTS) – Ridley Noah Fast / Ridley Helium SLX

Lotto-Soudal have enjoyed a long partnershop with Ridley Bikes. Riders this year get to choose from the Noah Fast, Ridley’s all round aero bike & the Ridley Helium, Ridley’s super-light climbing bike. In the Spring Classics the Noah Fast takes precedence, but the Helium SLX is the bike of choice when the roads head skywards.

Caleb Ewan is a rider who showcases what the Noah Fast is all about – a couple of weeks ago he powered to vicotry on his Noah Fast on a sprint stage of the Tirreno Adriatico. Whilst here in Girona local cyclists tend to to opt for the Helium SLX to take on our local climbs, the Noah Fast is perfect for riders who know exactly what they are looking for in a bike: speed, responsiveness & aerodynamics.

Lotto Soudal race with Shimano Dura Ace, DT Swiss wheelsets & 4iii power meters.

Team BikeExchange-Jayco (BEX) – Giant TCR Advanced SL / Propel Advanced

(Photo by Tim de Waele/Getty Images)

Bike Exchange mix good vibes with hardcore racing & it’s always great to see the team celebrate when they claim a win. Their sprinters have been racking up the early season victories – Kaden Groves & Michael Matthews took back to back wins in the Volta Cataluyna aboard their Giant TCR SL Advanced bikes. The TCR SL Advanced is Giant’s take on an ‘ultimate all-round race bike’ & with 30 years of victories, it’s hard to argue with. On the shop floor the TCR offers an an amazing package for the price point – the only thing holding it back from bestseller status is that Giant have not yet made the move to fully integrated cables.

Bike Exchange race with Shimano Dura Ace Di2.

    Israel-Premier Tech (IPT) – Factor Ostro VAM / O2 VAM / One

Israel-Premier Tech are one of the newest teams in the World Tour & are sponsored by high end British brand, Factor. Their bikes are a best seller on the Eat Sleep Cycle shop floor & are the envy of the peloton. IPT have been busy building a roster of super star names – the likes of Chris Froome, Sep Vanmarke & Michael Woods are just three of the riders bringing regular headlines in.

The team held a pre-season training camp this year in Girona & the Ostro was the visible bike of choice for the IPT riders. This trickles down to what amateur riders are looking for in a modern bike. The Ostro is perhaps the best all-rounder on the market combining the best of the uber-lightweight O2 VAM with the aerodynamics & stiffness of the One. The design of the seatstays ensures the bike is also comfortable to ride. It’s a tough bike to beat for our customers & for the IPT riders.

IPT Factor bikes are built with Rotor Aldhu chainsets, Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 shifters & Black Inc wheelsets.

Cofidis (COF) – De Rosa Merak – Campagnolo Super Record EPS

Last but not least is Team Cofidis & their De Rosa Merak. De Rosa is a boutique Italian brand, the Merak is their equivalent of the Ostro – an awesome all-round race bike. It’s light, responsive (stiff) & comfortable too. Guillame Martin rode his to a strong 8th place in the Volta Catalunya – Cofidis achieved World Tour status in 2020 – a huge deal reflecting the ambition perseverance & sacrifice of the team.

On the shop floor the Merak turns heads amongst our customers. It’s a bike suited to those in the know, for those who appreciate Italian made quality & timeless design & for those who choose not to follow the latest trend on instagram.

Cofidis’ De Rosa Bikes are built with Campagnolo Super Record EPS.

Want to learn more about these beautiful bikes?

Visit us in our Girona Hub to see these amazing machines first hand. During the cycling season we’re open 7 days a week, 09:00 – 14:00 / 16:00 – 19:00. We have a number of the bikes also available to hire – see our available bike hire options & treat yourself to a test ride.

  • De Rosa Bikes: Evolution & Origins

As we head into Spring (yes, it feels like Spring here in Girona already!) we take a look at the origins & evolution of boutique Italian bike brand, De Rosa.

    De Rosa Bikes: Racing Origins

Ugo De Rosa was born in Milan, Italy in 1934. He grew up with a strong passion for racing & studied mechancis & engineering whilst competing in the amateur Italian peloton. In 1953, at the age of 19, he opened his first shop & started to make racing bikes. Just 5 years later his reptuation had spread & pro-cyclist & hero of the Italian nation, Raphaël Géminiani, asked De Rosa to build him a bike for the Giro d’Italia. And so began De Rosa’s long & strong history at the top level of cycling.

De Rosa’s first team in the peloton was Faema & by 1973 De Rosa was the team mechanic & official frame builder for Eddy Mercx & his highly successful Molteni team. In 1974 De Rosa won the World Championships with Francesco Moser. By the end of the 70’s & 20 years after opening his first workshop, De Rosa bikes exploded on the international scene, with huge demand for his machines in the USA, Russia & across Europe. Ugo decided to close his small workshop next to his home & move to a larger space in Milan.

Keeping things in the family has long been a tradition for Italian bike makers, and it’s no different for De Rosa. Ugo’s three sons Danilo, Doriano & Cristiano joined the company to look after production & to develop the comercial side of De Rosa.

De Rosa are a forward looking company who currently the bike sponsor for World Tour team, Cofidis, who raced to a stage win in the 2021 Giro d’Italia for Victor Lafay. Founder Ugo De Rosa leaves us with these words, a testiment to the forward-looking nature of the company which has the innovation of the bicycle engraved at the heart of its soul:

I am a man who goes straight to the point. And, by force of habit, I never look back and count the years I have spent making frames. I prefer to look ahead, because after half a century, I am still convinced that the bicycle has room for improvement. And, just has I have done up till now, in the future too I want to contribute to the evolution of this fascinating vehicle, which at the same time is so simple and so complicated.

    De Rosa Carbon Road Bikes

De Rosa started to manufacture carbon bikes in the year 2000 – let’s take a look at their top of the line carbon frames 20 years later:

De Rosa Merak: Lightweight Race Bike

De Rosa’s Merak is a pure racing machine. In 2020 the Merak has come back to the De Rosa product range, ready for competition, whether its racing at high level competitions or riding granfondo’s. The Merak is a beautiful bike that can tackle the demanding nature of the sport. It’s a lightweight climbing bike promising comfort & aerodymanic excellence.

Whilst selecting the Merak is easy, the real challenge comes with how to spec the bike – check out our three builds below:

Let us know in the comments below how you’d build yours.

De Rosa SK Pininfarina: Aero Race Bike

The SK Pininfarina is a collaboration between two great icons of Italian manufacturing: De Rosa and Pininfarina, whose shared values for high-performance, artisanship and attention to detail, have been reflected in this aerodynamic bike build. The New SK Pininfaina “aims to be the point of reference for te aerodynamic and fast bikes in the international cycling scenery.”

An integrated cockpit, clean lines, and aerodynamic tubes, the SK Pininfaina is stunning model for those wanting a fast machine to race on, or even for those wanting to win the town sign sprints.

De Rosa Idol: Endurance Road Bike

The Idol is model that stands out in this day and age of road bikes, the slightly curved top tube, the “Arc Slope curvature”, is a signature for the Idol range. The “unmistakeable appearance is able to express the style and design that have always been brand’s trademark.”

De Rosa 838: The Perfect Introduction to De Rosa

An all-round bike for riders seeking a taste of De Rosa riding, best described by De Rosa themselves:

Simple, decisive, and effective lines with a clear mission: welcoming you into De Rosa’s world, without compromising on style and performance. The frame of the new De Rosa 838 is made of carbon, weighing about 900 grams, it is a slightly sloping frame and offers a beautiful balance with the out-of-saddle. The down tube stands out for its sinuosity and the gearbox is elliptical, polished, to ensure greater stiffness. The chainstays are minimal and the head tube is able to accommodate the fully integrated cable routing for a very clean look and reduced aerodynamic impact. The fork accommodates tires up to 32mm. 838 is your first De Rosa, your first will to ride a heart bike.

De Rosa Steel Bikes: 55 Years Later

When Ugo started making bikes in the 1950’s steel was the material of choice. In 2005 (55 years later!) De Rosa returned to it’s origins & launched its brand new lightweight steel frame, the Corum.

Once again De Rosa are reaching beyond just the carbon bike offering with a steel racing frame, Corum. We’re seeing the “want” for steel bikes on the rise once again and De Rosa have hit the nail on the head with this steel frame, built with softer alloy in the fork. The Corum is built for speed, but she’s a bike built traditionally – tying cycling’s history with a new frontier of racing.

Corum – “She is the lone voice. She is the steel and the passion.”

De Rosa Titanium Road Bikes: Anima & Solo

A De Rosa titanium frame is built to “transmit the ultimate riding experience”. On the launch of their new Anima titatium bike, De Rosa had this to say:

Titanium has been in De Rosa’s factory for 25 years and the Anima bike is the latest expression of this, the symbol of an evolving craftsmanship tradition. The frame of the  Anima represents the Black Label tailor-made technology created to mark the excellence of De Rosa frame production. The concept is simple: create a “Made to Measure” frame that fits the body of the cyclist. In the same way that Ugo De Rosa has been building bicycles for over 65 years, the black label program gives the cyclist complete control over the creative process. You choose the materials, details, and geometry to ride a unique masterpiece built and finished by the skilled hands of the master craftsmen in Cusano Milanino.

  • Eat Sleep Cycle: Introducing Vielo Bike Brand

British brand Vielo are coming on board at Eat Sleep Cycle. Vielo build unique road and gravel bikes, standing out with bold colours and custom 1x chainrings. We interview father & son founders Trevor and Ian to find out more about this bike brand, how it came to be, and about the stunning bikes that they offer.

Tell us about Vielo, how and when were you founded?

“Vielo was founded in 2018. With over 36 years experience in sales, marketing, brand building and distribution for high end global bicycle brands (Marin, Scott, Storck, Sarto and Lightweight wheels) we decided to use all our knowledge, passion and energy to build our own brand Vielo.

We brought together a small team of like minded people who shared our values of honesty, integrity and reliability to launch our first model, the Vielo V+1 gravel bike’.”

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Cycling-Girona-Bike-Vielo-v1g1

What sets you apart from other bike brands?

“Vielo is positioned as indie boutique British brand that offers cycling fans around the world with an exclusive range of exceptional high-end, cutting edge bicycles and products focused on innovation, fusing the latest carbon fibre technology and know-how with beautiful design and craftsmanship.  Underpinned with a passion and belief to make it better.”

You’re big fans of 1x, what is it that you prefer about 1x over 2x?

“We are forward thinking and knew (back in 2017) that groupset manufactures were going to bring 12 and 13 speed groupsets to the market in the very near future.  This meant that the number of gears normally used on a 2x system would be covered in a 1x  12 or 13 speed range.  From here, we would have a lot more freedom to design and engineer our gravel and road bike frame with just a single chain ring and no front mech. Both the Vielo R+1 road bike and V+1 gravel bike are designed around a fully 1x drive line.

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Cycling-Girona-Bike-Vielo-1x-Chainring

We offer a range of our own CNC machined chainrings that are engineered to accommodate a perfect chain line across Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo to suit every riders needs in both road and gravel.

The benefit of our 1x frames is to increase the BB stiffness by 32% (over a 2x frame), offer increased tyre width and fully symmetrical frame design.”

What frames do you currently offer, and could you tell us a little about them?

“The R+1 road bike is available in 2 frame levels. The Alto frame (880g) is fully integrated for (SRAM) wireless shifting. Plus the Strato frame (1100g) for regular cable routing to accommodate mechanical and e-wire shifting.   Both frames accommodate 32mm tyres on modern wider rims to reduce high frequency road vibration, plus additional mechanical comfort from the rear seat stay design.

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Cycling-Girona-Bike-Vielo-R1

The 2nd Generation V+1 gravel bike follows the form of the R+1 symmetrical  down tube to BB junction, accommodates 50mm tyres in 700c and 650b with (non dropped) symmetrical chain stays and further comfort via the curved tube shapes of the rear seat stays.   The V+1 Alto is 880g and the Strato is 1100g. Both frames can take regular mechanical and e-wire systems.”

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Cycling-Girona-Bike-Vielo-v1g2

I have to admit, I love your colour schemes. In a world of black and stealth looking bikes, having some colour is becoming more and more appealing. Why were you drawn to making sure your frames were colourful?

“We like to be forward thinking with our colour pallets and simple graphic design. We don’t do Black.”

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Cycling-Girona-Bike-Vielo-Colourways

We’re looking forward to having Vielo at Eat Sleep Cycle, what are you most looking forward to about joining the ESC family?

“We love working with like-minded dealers and staff that have similar values to ourselves, plus we are a family business. We look forward to building our trading relationship long into the future.”

We can’t wait to have Vielo in store, so keep your eye our for when we’ll have stock!

We already work with makers of steel bikes (2-11 Cycles, RS Cycles, Sour) & titatium bikes (Reilly Cycles, Moots, No. 22) and so it is with great pleasure that we add Sarto, custom carbon frame makers, to our brand partners. This week saw the arrival of our first Sarto frame – a  stunning Seta frame in a steel blue which is turning all our heads. Read on to find out more.

    About Sarto

Sarto offer a top of the line, fully customisable carbon frame, handmade in Italy since 1960. Sarto offer a fully customisable experience, from geometry, graphics, and even reinforcements on the frame from kevlar, titanium, or carbon.

Sarto: Custom Carbon Road Bike Frames

Sarto offer a choice of five different frames: Seta (for long, comfortable rides), Lampo (the aero bike), Asola (the climbing bike), Dinamica (the crit racing bike) & Veneto (a sport bike) – designed to offer something for every type of cyclist.

    Seta

Elegant, and complete. Made with the stiffest carbon on the market, clean lines with a flat top tube and thin chain stay, as well as a new integrated seat clamp, the Seta is a stunning choice of frame.

    Seta Plus

Advanced, and modern. Offering fully integrated routing with hidden cables, this frame, stem, and adaptability offer maximum adaptability. The new design ensures maximum comfort with the seat stays directly connected to the horizontal tube, as well as the fork and rear stays being able to accommodate tyres up to 35mm wide.

    Seta Plus Tri-Composite

A nimble and dynamic bike frame. The Seta plus Tri-Composite is built for comfort, both on the flat and on the climbs. Resin, carbon fiber and metal filaments: Tri-Composite opens the new era of carbon frames by increasing the technical performance of the bicycle as well as giving it a sleek and powerful look.

    Lampo

Dynamic, and spirited. With speed in mind first and foremost, built with a special surface on the frame tube to increase airflow.

    Lampo Plus

Pure, and extremely fast. A machine built for speed, each and every tube has been made to be aerodynamic. The fundamental components of this design is the new handlebar stem, entirely in carbon, specifically designed and optimised to route the handlebar cables directly into the frame, and the new steering tube designed to guarantee top driving quality and perfect integration of all internal cables.

    Asola

“The best climbing frame we ever made” – Sarto.

    Asola Plus

Asola, the longest selling frame in our range, evolves with the PLUS version, offering total cable integration in the disc brake version.

    Dynamica

Sporty, and powerful. Whether you’re racing in criteriums, on the road, or in gran fondos, this is a top choice frame.

    Veneto SL

For optimum comfort. “Suitable for cyclists who respect tradition yet love innovation.” – Sarto.

  • Tour de France Bike Round Up

What a Tour de France it was this year! We have loved watching the yellow jersey win on a Colnago once again, and loved seeing so many of our favourite bikes out on the road. We take a look at the star bikes of the Tour de France from Colnago, Cervélo, Ridley & Factor.

    UAE Emirates: Colnago Bikes

This year UAE Emiriates rode a combination of the Colnago V3Rs, Colnago Concepts, and the Colnago C64’s, built with Campagnolo Super Record EPS. Yellow jersey Tadej Pojacar rode a Colnago V3Rs, built with Campagnolo, Deda, and Prologo.

One of the great things about the Tour de France is that we often see new tech, and designs. Colnago released 108 limited editions of their V3Rs road bikes, we were fortunate to one which flew off the shop floor!

We are a Colnago dealer and stock a range of bikes and frameset’s. Girona local Bre Vine recently bought a Colnago C64 and wrote a blog on why this was her bike of choice, read it here.

    Jumbo-Visma: Cervélo Bikes

From 2021 Jumbo-Visma are sponsored by Cervelo bikes and rode a range of the Cervelo road bikes during the Tour de France, including the Cervelo R5, Cervelo S5, and Cervelo Caledonia, all built with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2.

Be it for sprinting, climbing, or a all-round classics bred build, Cervelo has a bike fit for any need. Wout Van Aert stunned fans with 3 epic wins with a mountain stage win on Mont Ventoux, a individual time-trial win, and the most coveted sprint of all in the Tour de France on the Champs Elyesee. Van Aert rides a Cervelo S5 for the sprint stages, and an R5 for the mountain stages, built with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2.

Not only are we a Cervelo dealer, we are also currently running an offer on a selected range of our Cervelo bikes! Check it out here.

    Israel Start-Up Nation: Factor Bikes

We were thrilled to see that Factor are continuing their sponsorship of Israel Start-Up Nation for 2022! This year the team rode a combination of the Factor Ostro’s, and Factor VAM 02 rim brake edition, all built with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2.

We even saw Chris Froome riding a new time-trial bike named the Hanzo, we look forward to finding out more about! ISN star rider Micheal Woods rode into the Polka Dot jersey on stage 14 of the Tour de France on the Factor Ostro VAM, showing the versatility of the Ostro VAM as an aero climbing bike!

Israel Start-Up Nation coach, Ciarán O’Grady, recently bought a Factor Ostro from Eat Sleep Cycle, read his blog here. His partner, Rocket Rawrrs, also recently bought a Factor VAM 02, read her blog here.

We are an official Factor dealer & our mechanics are specialists in Factor builds. Browse our range of in-stock Factor bikes.

    Lotto Soudal: Ridley Bikes

Lotto Soudal is a Belgian professional cycling team riding Ridley bikes which are made in Belgium. Lotto Soudal rode both the Ridley Helium, being the light weight climbing bike, and the Ridley Noah Fast which is a speed machine, built with Campagnolo Super Record EPS.

We sadly didn’t get to see much of Caleb Ewan on his Noah Fast after he crashed out on Stage 3 having fractured his right collarbone in four spots during a high-speed crash towards the finish line. However, we did see a number of strong rides from the team, including from 23 year old Brent Van Moer on Stage 4 where he was caught close to line by the sprint teams fighting for the win.

Not only do we stock a range of Ridley road bikes, including the Helium, Fenix SliC, and Noah Fast, we also stock Ridley gravel bikes such as the Kanzo Adventure and Kanzo Fast! See our Ridley bikes here.

  • Factor VAM 02 – Rocket Rawrrs Custom Build

I recently bought a Factor VAM 02 as an upgrade to my S Works SL5. I’ve been on the hunt for a new bike for awhile, patiently waiting until the right bike came at the right time. The Factor VAM 02 was that bike, and I’m happy to say that I fell in love with this bike on my first test ride, she’s light, responsive, climbs like a beast and super comfortable to descend on.

    Choosing the Factor O2 VAM

I’d been looking for a new bike for awhile, knowing I couldn’t upgrade to another S Works, I was looking for a bike that was in budget, preferably a second hand or an ex-rental to be more eco-conscious and cost effective, and also wanted a pure climbing bike. The Factor VAM 02 fit my criteria, she’s an ex-rental frame from Eat Sleep Cycle in perfect condition, a pure climbing bike, and was in budget!
I took her for a test ride and by the end of the ride had completely fallen in love with how she felt on the road, so I decided there and then this was the one for me.
It’s not often we really take into consideration the environmental impact of new bikes and bike parts, and so for me, buying what I could for my new bike second hand, and utilising what I already had was really important. Eat Sleep Cycle were so supportive with this and do offer their ex-rental fleets at a superb price after the rental season, they also have a bike exchange programme and sell on the second hand bikes! All of which are professionally checked before hand. I really rate this initiative.

    Factor o2 VAM Ride Style

The biggest noticeable difference for me is actually my confidence when descending. My previous bike had very narrow handlebars which was suitable for the races I had been doing, but I now I have 38cm wide handlebars and feel like I have a lot more control when descending. I have been able to push my skills so much further so going for the Factor VAM 02 has definitely changed my riding style.

It’s also helped my climbing ability and over the past few months of riding this bike my climbing style has changed and become so much more efficient.

Factor O2 VAM vs Factor Ostro

There are so many things I love about my new bike, and that I changed from my old S Works. I am also now on disc brakes, mainly because this was the option that was available rather than a conscious choice to opt for disc brakes, but I really am getting on well with them and have to say I’m definitely a convert.

The Factor VAM 02 is comfortable, light, and responsive. She’s at home in the mountains and hilly terrain and is so perfect for a place like Girona. My partner recently bought a Factor Ostro which is stiffer and more race ready, having given that a little spin I’m glad I went for the VAM 02!

Living in Girona: Making the Move from the UK

My partner started working for Israel Start-Up Nation as a coach and they have a heavy presence in Girona, he was keen to make the move and live closer to the team having spent the last few years away from his teams due to my work. We decided to take the leap to starting a new life in a new country, its been a dream of ours to do this for a long time!

Best Road Cycling Route in Girona

Its a route I created, an amalgamation of two routes I love. Its a mix between the “Coast Loop” and “Romanyà de la Selva Loop”. You head out from Girona to Tossa de Mar and follow the coast road until you hit the beginning of the Sant Grau climb. This is one of my favourite climbs in Girona as the views are amazing! You then head back down into Llagostera, but take a right at the roundabout rather than following the road you came in on. Follow this up to Romanyà de la Selva, where you then head back down passing Calonge, up another climb and onwards to Madremanya. There is another road you could take which is a little nicer, but far more busy, so I stick to my quiet roads. You end this route by heading up the backside of Els Angels, back down the longer side, and finally rolling home into Girona and to a café for some sustenance. The route is 132km and over 2,000m of climbing.

  • Factor Ostro VAM – Ciarán O’Grady’s Custom Build

Israel Start-Up Nation’s coach, Ciarán O’Grady, fell in love with the Factor Ostro’s the team were using, so he bought one from Eat Sleep Cycle! He’s customised this stunning bike to fit his personal specifications, see what he has to say about his custom build.

Why did you choose the Factor Ostro VAM?

I chose the Factor OSTRO because I wanted a bike that was aerodynamically optimised whilst still remaining light weight. I also wanted something that was super stiff, and designed with racing and aggressive riding in mind. The added bonus of the Ceramic Speed additions to the bike made it very appealing!
As I work for the professional cycling team Israel Start-Up Nation, I have seen these bikes being raced throughout the year with the riders giving so much good feedback from how the OSTRO performs. I have also heard from the team mechanics how well built they are and how they stand up to the rigours of professional racing. Knowing this, I was confident that the Factor OSTRO would be exactly what I was looking for.

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Ciarán-O'Grady-Factor-Ostro-VAM

How has the Factor Ostro changed your riding style?

The Factor OSTRO has allowed me to ride in the natural way that I’d want to be riding my bike. The bike becomes an extension of who I am, responding really well to my requests!

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Factor-Ostro-Vam

Anything else you want to add about your Factor Ostro?

I really love the integrated front end of the Factor OSTRO, it just looks super sleek. The wide-set forks are very stiff and have great aerodynamic properties (I have actually tested it in the wind tunnel!). With the Black Inc 60’s set up, it just flies wherever you take it!

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Ciarán-O'Grady-Factor-Ostro-VAM

How did you end up in Girona?

I travelled to Girona late last year with my fiancée, “Rocket”, after I started working for the professional cycling team Israel Start-Up Nation, who have a base here in Girona. I’ve been coaching riders who have been based in Girona for several years so I knew a lot about the city and how great the training is around Catalunya!

    Eat-Sleep-Cycle-Ciarán-O'Grady-Factor-Ostro-VAM

What is your favourite road cycling ride from Girona?

I have two favourite rides here in Girona at the moment. The first is a loop I call the “Maple Leaf”, as it looks… kinda like a maple leaf. It’s 61km and has three climbing sections, nothing crazy but just three good pushes. It heads west from Girona up around Canet d’Adri, then over Les Serres, and back to Girona over Mas Llunes. The second ride is a longer 108km ride with one short climb and one longer climb. It also heads west from Girona out through Sant Gregori, up and over Les Serres towards Angels, then heading up the long climb to Sant Hilari Sacalm. From there, you take a long and twisty descent down Santa Coloma de Farners, and back to Girona through Aiguaviva.

Ciarán’s Custom Factor Ostro VAM Build:

Frame: 49cm Factor Ostro VAM Flicker

Handlebars: Black Inc integrated handlebar and stem, 38cm by 120mm

    Groupset: Shimano Ultegra Di2

    Cranks & Power Meter: Quarq

Wheelset: Black Inc Team Edition 60mm

    Tyres: Maxis Highroad 25mm
