  • 2020 In Review – A Year of New Opportunities

Many people across the world can not wait to see the back of 2020 and welcome in a New Year. It has been a devastating year for millions of people all over the world and our thoughts and best wishes go out to all those families who have lost loved ones and those on the front line fighting the virus everyday. Businesses have also taken a huge blow, many forced to close for extended periods. The virus has taken no prisoners.

At Eat Sleep Cycle, first and foremost we are grateful for the good health of our staff and their friends and families. We have an international team based in Girona, also including local Catalans. Most of us have not seen our families in over one year and welcome the day we can get together and make more happy memories with them.

As for our business, our team reflects on 2020 and looks forward to 2021 with great optimism and for good reason. Eat Sleep Cycle is stronger now than it has ever been.

In 2019, 85% of our business relied on tourism; tours and bike hire for our loyal guests traveling from overseas, with key markets being the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and Australia. The remaining 15% was our relatively small retail operation.

In March 2020 flights into Europe ground to a halt; it was the perfect recipe for disaster for our business. We observed the virus start in China, move to Italy (affecting delivery from our Italian suppliers), then to Spain (where we suffered one of the strictest lockdowns) and then to other parts of Europe and the USA. The lowest point for us was when in many parts of the world cycling was banned. Hope of tours in Summer 2020 quickly diminished and it was time to get the flipcharts out and idea shower what we were to do.

    Dealing with the Unexpected

At the core of Eat Sleep Cycle is our customer service so we assigned the role of customer cancellations first. Every email received a personal and thought through reply (no automatic responses here, ever). We celebrated every guest that worked with us to move, reschedule and accept vouchers for tour and bike hire bookings. We have developed stronger relationships with many of our guests through this process.

Eat Sleep Cycle is as good as its staff and guides. We wanted to do everything possible to keep our core team safe, whilst communicating clearly with everybody else about the reality of the situation. We even managed to pick-up a few highly talented people along the way. In 2020 our team has become stronger and more talented than ever.

Turning Things Around – A Cycling Boom

So we are people-focused at Eat Sleep Cycle, but what on earth were we going to do about our business? We looked at our Strengths, Weaknesses, the Opportunities and the Threats. We did it as a team, we sought advice and guidance when necessary and came up with a plan. We also took measured risks.

We saw first hand the boom of cycling and other outdoor activities. The more they locked people down in Spain, the more people would get out and exercise when they could in the designated time slots. Whilst the general global outlook was negative, this “get up and go” phenomena fueled our work. We realised that we did have something to offer people during the pandemic, especially local people in and around Girona.

We discounted our bike hire prices for local people to give those who did not have a bike the chance to try it out before buying. We sold off our bike rental fleet (intended for tourism) to give local people access to affordable second hand bikes at a fair price and with full mechanical confidence. Whether pro racer or cyclist first-timer we welcome every 2-wheeler with open arms. This new focus on local meant everybodies language skills needed to improve so Spanish and Catalan classes followed, a small investment with a big reward when that local person is greeted in their own language.

Eat-Sleep-Cycle-2020-New-Bike-Day-Thankyou-CustomersBut that was not enough to maintain our footprint (a large Hub in the center of Girona), a Tours HQ and Tour Warehouse housing our vehicles. As the virus worsened it was clear that there would be no tourism for the entire year.

Creating an Awesome Local Bike Shop

So we focused on our retail business. We invested heavily in bikes, not just road but gravel, mountain bikes and electric too, even time trial bikes. We stocked up on spare parts and components like wheels, groupsets and everything else that a cyclist needs. Whilst others were putting the shutters down we formed new collaborations with brands telling them “now is the best time to start together”. Some came on board and some missed out. When one supplier or brand could not deliver we ordered from another. We did not turn down a single customer, always finding an equivalent product. Local people really started to notice, coming into the Hub and saying “i´ve heard you guys have lots of stock”. Friends sent friends, the word got out.

As partner of the business I went from managing a large tours business to working on the retail front line. I did my homework on our product, studying the specifications. I rode every bike that we sell, enabling me to highlight strengths and weaknesses of each model. We trained our teams on the new product, they trained themselves too. We became experts in what we sell. I loved it and could see that the team was enjoying the new challenge too. The daily deliveries from suppliers increased and we were excited to see what new tech was inside.

But we could still see the large online retailers taking sales even from our local customers. We also wanted to reach out to our tour guests all over the world with our unique offering.

Maximising Our Potential – Eat Sleep Cycle Hub Online!

We had an online shop but it was not fit for purpose. We formed an online shop emergency squad from our existing team and worked flat out to get our product online. We saw immediate benefit both from local and abroad. People would come into the Hub with the product on their phone. We started getting random online purchases from Singapore, Australia and the USA.

These were new challenges for the team and it was hard work. To keep up team morale we ran daily stand-up meetings, a weekly team ride, monthly bonuses for hitting new retail targets (of course this was credit to be used on our product), week-end trips to Mt Ventoux and the Pyrenees and regular catch-ups and recognition of team performance.

Eat-Sleep-Cycle-2020-Team-Events-Rides2020 has been a silver lining for Eat Sleep Cycle. Having several business streams (tourism + retail) before Covid was questioned by business analysts but has been a key recipe to our success. A multi-disciplined and international team has been critical, with our core team changing their role as required to support the business and in satisfying our local and foreign customer base. We are also always amazed by the benefit of debate and disagreement before coming to the agreed way forward from a multicultural team. None of this would have been possible without our loyal tour and bike hire guests, local Catalan people, the pros who live in Girona, and our incredible staff team, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

Looking Ahead to 2021: What’s Next?

2021 will be the most exciting year in Eat Sleep Cycle history!

We are ready for the return of our tour guests from all over the world to provide world class bike hire in Girona and tours throughout Europe. We are adding some new destinations and our VIP guests will be invited along to those first excursions. We have completely maintained our Girona footprint including our Hub, logistical warehouse housing fully equipped vehicles and tours HQ. In fact we are working on a further expansion for 2021, full details will be revealed soon!

Our bike rental fleet will be bigger and better in 2021. Our orders have already been in with our partner brands for some time for their latest top of the range bikes. We will offer a wider range than ever by introducing Cervelo, Focus and Kona to our existing fleet of Factor, Ridley, Basso and Focus. The fleet will include more gravel bikes and now full suspension mountain bikes and more electric bikes.

Our plan is to not only sustain but also grow our local bike shop: the Hub, which currently sells a range of bikes, clothing and bike components everyday. This means we will continue to improve our service to the local community too. Our rental fleet doubles up as a demo fleet so anybody can try out a range of bikes from entry level to the latest top of the range tech.

We will work even closer with our partner brands, support their product launches and test their technology in the field. Of course this will all only be made possible by expanding our team, with a focus on local people for our Girona operation. Watch this space!

A Huge THANK YOU from from all of us at Eat Sleep Cycle for your support & enabling us to succeed in what was a very unexpected year. We hope to ride with you all in 2021!

  • Travel in our ‘New Normal’ World

    Protecting our Guests & Guides

Travel always has risks & now more than ever the decision to travel or not is a personal one. For those who are ready to travel again & get back in the saddle we’re taking extra precautions to make sure we’re doing everything we can to keep our guests & guides safe during their Eat Sleep Cycle tour.

    Cleanliness

    Hotels

We work with carefully selected hotels who already pride themselves on spotless rooms & public areas. We ensure that all the hotels & guesthouses we work with are following the new protocols for social distancing & cleanliness. We also prioritise working with small, boutique hotels ensuring our guests contact with as few people as possible.

    Food Preparation

We will continue to serve our trademark picnic lunches on tour. Our team will be wearing masks & gloves during all food preparation & will follow all normal food preparation & hygeine guidelines.

    Equipment

Our vehicles, bikes & any equipment like GPS devices & pumps will be sterilised every day.

    Travel Companions

We love to run private trips for individuals, couples & groups of friends and family – we do not have a minimum group size.

We will continue to run our scheduled tours as we know many of our guests love to travel solo and ride with new people. Again, we keep numbers to a minimum – many of our scheduled tours run with groups of 6 people or less.

    Being Prepared

    Healthy Travel

When you arrive on tour your guide will give you a quick contactless temperature test – anyone with a temperature of over 38 C / 100 F will not be allowed to participate in the group tour. Guests are asked not to travel if they feel unwell.

    Support & Advice

We are here to support you during your trip & our team in the office & guides out on the road are on hand 24/7 to help navigate any unexpected situations. All of our guides are First Aid & CPR trained & speak the local language of wherever you’re travelling. We have a protocal to follow should anyone fall ill on tour.

We will also let you know ahead of time if your destination country requires proof of a negative Coronavirus test to gain entry at the time of your tour.

    Face Coverings

All guests are invited to bring their own face mask on tour. Whilst we do not ride wearing face masks, it’s great to have mask on standby at all times. We also carry hand sanitizer on tour & suggest all guests bring their own too.

    Meals

During our tours we dine in small local restuarants & request a table outside whenever possible & when the weather permits.

  • How A Cycling Business Can Adapt In the Face of A Crisis

Our thoughts go out to all the people and businesses impacted by the Coronavirus outbreak. There are things more important than cycling holidays to take care of right now, however we wanted to both reassure our guests and provide some insight for other cycling businesses on the steps we are taking to make sure Eat Sleep Cycle emerges from this difficult time in tact and with a strong new direction.

    It’s all about the people

Our guests are most important to us. Moving trips and changing reservations is our priority and these are dealt with personally. Standard replies do not work and shutting down customer services during this period is not advised. We are not perfect but we promise to do our best to help you during these difficult times. Please bear with us whilst we work through your inquiries in order.

Next come our incredible staff team. We have a diverse multinational and multi-disciplined team. Our priority is keeping them busy with our new direction and they are with us 100% of the way. Together we are turning nervousness to excitement, threat to opportunity and negativity to positivity!

    Keep the faith

There may be nothing comparable to what the world has been and will go through over the months ahead. However, the world has survived financial crises and epidemics in the past. The world will recover and cycling will resume. Following previous financial crisis cycling has even seen growth as people look to outdoor activities to detach from problems and reduce stress.

Right now, we are faced with a terrible situation of conditions getting worse and worse every hour & every day. However, once we are over the curve of cases in each area, and isolation and other measures start working, peoples mentality will also change and cycling holidays will be a possibility once again.

Whilst it is difficult to predict when this will be it is important to remain positive and move tour reservations to later in the year, even to 2021.

Psychology shows that the process of enjoying a holiday begins once the holiday is booked. In these very challenging times, having something to look forward to (and train for be that indoor or outdoor), even if far into the future could be just what a cyclist needs.

This is why we have implemented special booking conditions and refundable deposits for 2021 bookings. Let some good feelings flow with a holiday to look forward to!

    Go online

It is interesting that the world’s largest online companies are growing during this time, whilst small shops who can not open their doors suffer. Social distancing means that in a lot of areas whilst online sales are allowed physical shop sales are not. Our Girona Hub is also temporarily closed for this reason. But do not give up!

Here at Eat Sleep Cycle we have worked night and day since the start of the outbreak to develop our online shop, to bring customers the best product at better prices than those large online retailers. We are able to do this due to the very special relationships we have with our brands. Whilst online retailers just sell product, we help to test and improve it as part of our bike hire fleet and also offer a close relationship with the end user on our tours, something that pure online retailers do not have.

If, like us, you have a close relationship with your guests and brands you can use this to your advantage.

    Local tourism

What will the tourism industry look like after the Coronavirus?

This is something that we are exploring and building on everyday and we are ready for it!

Less international travel, certainly in 2020 and moving into 2021 is likely. Local tourism is more sustainable and ties perfectly into Eat Sleep Cycle values. There may well be fewer customers coming from closer places so we look to the European market more strongly. We are already working on translating our website to multiple European languages and developing tour products that suit each market. This is an exciting new challenge for us!

We are exploring the concept of supplying cycling tours to people in their own country. Historically people want to travel abroad but this could change. Using our local guide database (rather than transporting guides from one place) we are in a position to do this with minimal environmental impact and minimal travel for our guests.

The dependence on flying may change and the train may be more popular. When we selected Girona as our base we partly did so for the great rail links to the rest of Europe. It is possible to arrive by train from the UK in just 9 hours, or 6 hours from Paris!

    Build the community

Eat Sleep Cycle has a grass-roots beginning. We ran small local events which we have built on over 5 years. We have built a large local following and this will be even more important in 2020.

We offer all cycling services to locals in Girona from our Girona Hub (bike fit, bike & component sales, kit sales, etc). One of our favorite examples is our bank manager being fully kitted out in MAAP kit from our retail space and her husband treating himself to a Factor VAM!

These same locals often enjoy our regular Girona events which are normally attended with a mixture of tourists too. As soon as conditions allow for it we will be running more of these events to get people back out enjoying cycling and get the good vibes going!

    Diversify services

From the beginning Eat Sleep Cycle has developed expertise in many different areas of cycling including European tours, corporate events, bike hire and retail. Recently we have added coaching, online retail and there are more tricks up our sleeve which we can not reveal just yet. Our team is multi-disciplined and can work across several areas of the business.

This approach is paying off dramatically during this crisis. Whilst our physical hub (shop) is closed the retail team can focus on developing our online shop.

Our tours team is busy moving guest reservations to later in the year and setting up for the biggest year in Eat Sleep Cycle history for 2021!

Many of our ideas come from the community and we are plugged into professional riders and coaches. We heard that coaches are also taking a hit during this period but also that many people want a training plan, especially since some are confined to training indoors. In comes our new coaching programs to help both parties. Of course there is nothing better to train for than a cycling holiday!

    In Summary

We hope that this is helpful to other cycling businesses and also useful for our guests. We wish you the very best during this period and we can not wait to ride with you again as soon as this is over.

  • Behind the Scenes: Bike Rental Girona

Back in the summer of 2016 three friends living in Girona pooled their credit cards, hunted for the best deal on the market & bought 7 bicycles. These bicycles were squeezed into an apartment hallway & delivered to the first Eat Sleep Cycle bike rental guests by founders Lee, Louise & Brian. Now, 3 and a bit years on, we’ve expanded from an apartment hallway to fill our Hub in Plaça Catalunya & a few months ago we opened a Service Course to house more bikes as well as our tour vehicles & equipment.

As the cycling tour season approaches, it’s a great time to reflect on why we work with the brands we work with.

    Ridley: A Belgian Classic

The core of our rental fleet comes from Ridley bikes. Ridley is based in Flanders, Belgium – the heartland of cycling & home to some of the most spectacular cycling events on the calendar, the Tour of Flanders & Gent-Wevelgem. It is Belgium where kids master the cobblestones by the age of 5, where the country comes to a standstill to watch the Spring Classics. Ridley, like Eat Sleep Cycle, is made up of a team of people who live & breathe cycling.

Founded by Flandrian Joachim Aerts in 1997, Ridley is a company which has innovation at its core. After racing from the age of 14 to 19, Aerts soon took a different path and learnt bike painting, welding & building. He founded his first bike company in 1994. Staying at the forefront of product design & development is key & their mission is to build cutting edge machines which reflect a riders individuality. To date, Ridley has collected 15 world titles, one for each year since its involvement in professional sponsorship. Ridley is now a household name with top pros riding their bikes, for instance the powerhouse team of Belgium-based Lotto-Soudal making expert use of their bikes.

In 2017 we were searching for a bike brand to work with here in Girona. Ridley had just signed a sponsorship deal with Irish Pro Continental Squad Aqua Blue. A few of their riders were in town and we kept seeing Ridley bikes flash past. Ridley were not with another shop in Girona, so we got in touch & a new partnership was born. Ridley bikes are a firm favourite with our guests. They have great geometry which works for everyone & are dream to work with for our mechanics.

    Our 2020 Ridley Bikes:

    • Fenix SL Disc – choice of 105 or Ultegra Di2
    • Helium SLX Ultegra Disc
    • Noah Fast Di2
    • Kanzo Adventure Sram Force 1x
    • Ignite
    • Tempo

Staff rides: Marc – Noah Fast, Nancy – Tempo

Factor: On top of the world

At the beginning of 2019 we were searching for a super-high end bike. We wanted to offer our guests the opportunity to ride one of the best bikes in the world during their tour of a lifetime. At the time we’d just started working with David Millar & his clothing brand, CHPT3. We’d seen David riding around on his beautiful One More Lap design bike and heard good things from riders in teh One Pro cycling team (at the time sponsored by Factor). One Linked in connection request later, and we were in touch with the owner of Factor Rob Gitels.

Factor Bikes is all about technology & its roots like in motorsport & aviation. In 2007 Factor Bikes was born in an industrial unit in Norfolk, England. Originally an offshoot of bf1systems, Factor began as a leading engineering firm dedicated to working at the highest levels of design with some of the fastest, most prestigious brands in the world including Ferrari, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Maserati and many F1, Moto GP, and WRC teams.

In 2009 Factor entered the cycling world with the revolutionary FACTOR001. More pioneering development ensued and in 2012, Factor launched a collaboration with Aston Martin – the Factor ONE-77 £25k Hyper Bike. By 2013 Factor was unveiling its first production bike, the rule-breaking Vis Vires which included a bf1systems-developed power meter, a distinctive Twin Vane split down tube and a split external ‘Dual Bayonet’ fork. The Vis Vires platform debuted to unanimous critical acclaim from both the world’s cycling press and prestigious design award committees.

In 2014 the Factor engineers turned their attention to developing the next generation of frames, including the ONE & O2. Enter Baden Cooke. A top professional for 14 years, an Olympian & winner of over 50 races, Baden won the Green jersey in the Tour de France in 2003. As he worked with Factor, Baden fell in love with Factor’s vision & ideals. He took the Vis Vires for a test ride & that was it. Shortly after the ride Baden, along with engineer Rob Gitelis, purchased Factor Bikes from bf1systems.

The work continues and the new generation of Factor bikes continues to innovate & meet the highest demand of luxury performance.

    Our 2020 Factor Bikes:

    • Factor 02 VAM Ultegra Di2
    • Plus Factor 02 Di2 in sizes 46 & 61

Staff rides: Louise – Factor O2

Basso: Italian Passion & Family Values

By mid-2019 we had a gorgeous bike fleet made up of a combination of Belgian class & the highest level of British engineering. What we needed next was an injection of Italian passion. Enter Basso.

Basso is a family run business located in northern Italy, in the shadow of Monte Grappa, in the town of Bassano del Grappa. In 1974 Alcide Basso, the youngest of three sons in the Basso family, started making bicycles in his family’s garage. In 1977 be founded Basso Bikes & was joined a year later by his brother, Marino, when he retired from professional racing. Marino enjoyed an incredible career which saw him win many stages of the Tour of Italy and become World Champion in 1972 with a win that inspired a nation. Marino wanted to offer the public the same tools that professional riders used.

Alcide had a solid foundation in mechanics from growing up in the workshops of master craftsmen & from working as a mechanic with Marino’s professional teams. He traveled all over Europe and worked with teams like Salvarani, Bianchi & Magniflex. By 1976 Alcide was able to open a retail store & in 1981 he opened the first Basso factory. The combination of Alcide’s talent for mechanics & engineering with Marino’s experience as a professional racer, led Basso bikes to create a unique geometry & ride feel across their range of bikes, which still shine through today. Basso’s are bikes created for racers.

So in the summer of 2019 we sat down with Alessandro Basso, the son of founder Alcide & got hooked on all things Basso. These a bikes for riders looking for a pure Italian race experience – they are the perfect machines on which to discover the rugged climbs of northern Italy & the rolling hills of Tuscany.

    Our 2020 Basso Bikes:

    • Basso Astra Ultegra Disc
    • Basso Venta Ultegra Disc

Staff rides: Silvia – Basso Venta, Lee – Basso Astra

Reilly: Best in Class Titanium Bikes from Brighton, UK

We were looking for a missing experience for our gravel riders. With a stiff, fast carbon gravel bike from Ridley, perfect for high-octane dashes through the country side of Girona, we were missing a bike which would excel on the technical stuff & provide greater ride comfort. We asked the Gravel kings of Girona & we kept hearing about Reilly, so we got in touch. Enter Phil – all round legend & the guy who keeps things running smoothly at Reilly HQ.

Reilly is based in Brighton & is the work of renowned UK frame builder, Mark Reilly. Founder of Omega & then Enigma, Mark brings years of frame building expertise to the company. Co-founder Neil Fitzgerald comes from Formula 1 & the third partner, Damon Fischer, looks after graphic & product design. Together they create unique & beautiful bikes focused on creating the best ride experience for the user. Their approach is down to earth & their testing grounds are the rolling Sussex hills around Brighton.

    Our 2020 Reilly Bikes

    • Reilly Gradient GRX

    Focus Bikes: New Generation E-Bikes

The e-bike is a rising phenomenon in the cycling world with sales outstripping the sales of normal bikes. The e-bike is a fantastic way to level the playing field and for people of different levels to genuinely enjoy riding with each other. E-bikes make long kilometers & incredible landscapes accessible for a whole new group of people.

German brand Focus have a reputation for solid engineering. Their road e-bike has led the way for the industry & incorporates the latest technology for the lightest e-bike ride on the market. We’re waiting for the delivery of the first batch, so watch this space!

“CYCLING MECCA”: WHAT MAKES GIRONA SO GOOD FOR BIKE RIDING?

    28th-August-2023 | catalannews.com | Cillian Shields

“Over the past few years, the northern Catalan city of Girona has become one of the best places in the world for cycling. Between professional athletes moving to set up new lives in the city, to amateur enthusiasts visiting on two wheels, Girona has become a world capital for the sport.”

So sit back and scroll down to see our cycling highlights from 2019.

    Early-Season Sun

“Just finished the Costa Del Sol tour. What a great trip. Knut and Luis were a great team and provided a great experience. Everything from my bike rental to special mid-ride stops were taken care of. They were always checking with the group, altering the routes if needed. Their extensive knowledge of the area, both of the roads but also the history and culture, made the trip even more special. Would definitely recommend Eat Sleep Cycle and will tour with them again! Can’t wait to be visit Girona next time and ride there.” – Angie Harrison, Feb

Orbea Gain Rental Bikes - Eat Sleep Cycle

    Brilliant Bikes

“Able to supply a new (literally out of the box) e-assist Orbea Gain bike in my size for a recent trip. Totally fab fun – highly recommend. Staff could not be nicer or more helpful. Opened up on a Sunday morning to allow me to collect my bike and then provided a pre-loaded wahoo and lots of local advice. Can’t recommend highly enough (and I’m very fussy!). Their free of charge shop rides are simply lovely – so friendly with knowledgeable leaders. Turn up and enjoy.

P.S. don’t think all e-bikes are made equal. This one was fully carbon, looked normal enough to fool almost everyone and went up hills like the wind. I will miss her!” – Caroline N, Feb

    Costa Brava Cycling

“I took part in the last Costa Brava tour and had an absolute great time. ESC team was able to find a way to adapt the trip to my travel arrangement and I was able to join the tour for a few days. the group was international, interesting and fun people to be around, the parcour was breathtaking, and Knut (the guide) gave me the opportunity to push a bit more every day and get what I wanted from the rides. Chris (the guy stalking us in the van all day 😀 ) gives you support through day with plenty of fruits, bars and encouragements, this really gives you the possibility to enjoy 100% the rides. I’ll definitely come back to ride with them, absolute thumb up for the ESC team!!!” – Jean-Christophe Theard, April

Cyclist Trip to Mallorca - Eat Sleep Cycle Tour Operator

    Mallorca in May

“Have done many cycling trips throughout Europe but never had been to Mallorca before, a place that I had been in my bucket list for many years. Well, finally made it last May with the organisation and support from Eat Sleep Cycle and it was Amazing!! 6 nights, staying in 3 different bases, so two nights in each one. Different experiences, different views and sceneries and different rides in one single trip. We had the chance to gain a broad view and unique experience of the island. The hotels, the food, the rides, the roads, the guides, all the coffee and cake stops were really Top! The trip and Mallorca will remain in my memory as one of the best cycling trips and places that I have been, if not the best.” – Fabio, May

    Basque Country

“I just finished a custom tour they put together for just me which included baggage transport, GPS files for my daily routes, first class hotels, and bike rental in the Basque Country of Northern Spain. This was a last minute trip that they put together within a matter of weeks and it all went perfectly. Not one problem. I will definitely book future tours with Eat Sleep Cycle.” – Wayne Riley, August

    Fantastic Customer Service

“The customer experience was fantastic! Easy booking through web site – used chat bot to ask a few questions… immediate/helpful response. Once I got there, the people at the shop were extremely helpful in getting me set up for my rides: showed me routes, set my Wahoo Roam up… even gave me an electrical charger adapter… My bike was perfectly tuned and ready to go. If you’re ever in Girona, do yourself a favor and connect with Eat, Sleep, Cycle!” – Clain Udy, September

Tour de Mice - Costa Brava - Eat Sleep Cycle

Tour de MICE on the Costa Brava

We welcomed 90 guests from all over Europe to the ultimate networking event on bikes! It was a pleasure to work in partnership with the Costa Brava Tourist Board & Worldwide Events to deliver a seamless event for MICE industry professionals. Kudos to our team of 14 guides who ensured a safe & fun 4 days for guests at the beginning of their cycling journey, to seasoned riders smashing the climbs!

    Local Knowledge in Girona

“We had a group of 11 riders from the UK arrive at the ESC HQ at 9am and we were rolling on our first ride by 930am. Pedals, power meters, sensors all fitted and waivers signed. We’d pre-supplied bike fit measurements and every bike was pretty much spot on with reach and seat height. Hire bikes were best I’ve ridden, topping the box fresh F8 in Mallorca a few years back. We had a Girona native pro cyclist on off season as a guide who knew exactly where to go. And paced it hard enough to keep the faster riders happy without snapping the elastic for the slower bunch. Our guide’s local knowledge of the best roads, where to eat to get the real Catalan experience and how long everything would take, gave you confidence you were going to get home in daylight. Dropping bikes back was simple. Couldn’t fault them. Chapeau ESC and in particular Bernat!” – Chris Mather, October

  • First Look: Our Eat Sleep Cycle 2020 Bike Rental Fleet

Our 2020 rental fleet is finalised, and it’s bigger and better than ever before giving you more bike hire options. We’ve collaborated with brands that we admire, who share our values and, crucially, make fantastic bikes that our guests will love! We’ve also updated our fleet to 100% disc brakes. From road to gravel, electric bikes and hybrid bikes, there’s a bike (and cycling tour) for every type of cyclist to enjoy.

    New Rental Bikes for 2020

Let’s start with the new (and exciting!) arrivals for our 2020 rental fleet.

    New Gravel Rental Bikes
Gravel is the new black in cycling right now and to reflect that we’ve upped our gravel game by adding TWO new gravel bikes to our 2020 fleet. Ideal for use on our Girona gravel cycling tour or embracing the Trans Alps Gravel tour!

    Ridley Kanzo
First up is the Ridley Kanzo. Our 2019 fleet contained the Ridley X-Trail, the brand’s answer to an ‘all-road’ or gravel bike and we loved the versatility of this bike. Ridley have since replaced the X-Trail with the Kanzo Speed, a faster, racier, gravel-oriented bike and introduced the Kanzo Adventure; a bike designed for tougher gravel rides and with longer chainstays and a shorter reach for bigger tyres and more comfort on those long adventure rides.

    Ridley Kanzo Spec:

    • Groupset: SRAM Force 1
    • Wheels: Fulcrum Rapid Red 500 DB

Ridley Kanzo Bike Rental - Eat Sleep Cycle

    Reilly Gradient Disc
The second new addition to our gravel collection is the Reilly Gradient, a titanium gravel bike hand made in the UK. Not just a pretty frame (although have you SEEN it), in the brand’s own words: “The Reilly Gradient is an unprecedented engineering achievement. Combining a Hydro-formed REILLY AXIS 3AL-2.5V titanium tube set with our hugely flexible geometry”. We can’t wait to get out there and test it on the Girona gravel!

    Reilly Gradient Disc Spec:

    • Groupset: Shimano GRX
    • Wheels: Fulcrum Racing 900

Reilly Bike Rental - Eat Sleep Cycle - Spain

    New Road Rental Bikes
Road bikes make up the majority of our rental fleet and as such, curating a high-quality yet wide-ranging collection of road bikes for our guests to ride is paramount, these two new additions are no exception and will be the perfect two wheeled companions for our upcoming 2020 cycling tours.

Basso Diamante SV Ultegra Di2 Disc
For 2020 we will be augmenting our current collection of Basso bikes by adding the brand’s top-tier offering, the Diamante SV. The Diamante is the diamond in the Basso crown jewels, the top-end, aero, race offering from the Italian brand and the SV builds on previous Diamante incarnations with slight improvements and adjustments.

Basso Diamante SV Ultegra Di2 Disc Spec:

    • Groupset: Shimano Ultegra
    • Wheels: Microtech 38

Basso Diamante SV Ultegra Bike Rental - Eat Sleep Cycle - Spain

    Ridley Helium SLX Ultegra Disc
Both us and our guests love our Ridley rentals so we’re adding the top-end Ridley Helium SLX to our fleet for even more choice! In Ridley’s words, the Helium SLX is: “the highest level when it comes to stiffness to weight ratio. We’ve designed it to be as light as possible to tackle the longest, steepest climbs. Yet it is stiff and durable…”

Ridley Helium SLX Ultegra Disc Spec:

    • Groupset: Shimano Ultegra
    • Wheels: Fulcrum Racing 5

    Returning Rental Bikes for 2020

Now that we’ve gone through the lineup of new rental bike arrivals for 2020 it’s time to look at the tried and tested that will be returning to the rental fleet lineup for 2020!

    Road Rental Bikes
Basso Astra Ultegra Disc & Basso Venta
We love Basso! We introduced the Italian brand to our fleet only a few months ago and the bikes have since had a very exciting reception from everyone who has ridden them. You can read more about the Astra and Venta on this blog.

    Factor O2 VAM Disc
One of the most exciting bikes of 2019, the Factor O2 VAM has been a mega hit amongst both our tour and Girona guests as well as staff and friends of Eat Sleep Cycle. To find out more make sure you check out our Factor o2 VAM review (and preview!) to see why we love it.

Ridley Fenix 105 and Ultegra Disc
The Fenix has been in our fleet since 2018 and has received rave reviews from guests in both the 105 and Ultegra versions. Crucially, these models both run disc brakes, which we will be exclusively using in our rental fleet going forward.

    Electric and Hybrid Rental Bikes

We’ve spoken before about how electric bikes are a game changer for cycling vacations and what was true in 2019 is even more true for 2020.

Electric Bike Rental - Orbea Bike Rental - Eat Sleep Cycle - Spain

    Orbea Gain M20
Sometimes we all need a little boost, and the Orbea Gain M20 provides just that. For those riders who want to enjoy the thrill of climbing a mountain without the worry of whether they can make the whole way the Gain is a perfect safety net.

Ridley Tempo Disc (hybrid and electric)
Available as standard and e-bike versions, the Ridley Tempo disc is a great bike to take along the Via Verde or on a family ride or to explore a town and its surrounding area. Our guests have been impressed with the versatility of the Ridley Tempo Disc.

City Bike Rental - Brompton Bike Hire Girona

    City Bike Rental

If you’re looking for a leisurely cycle tour around a city then these are the bikes for you, spearheaded by the classic cycling brand, Brompton.

    Brompton
Bromptons are quite simply the best at what they do. A classic brand and a fabulous fold-up bike for getting around a city, we love Bromptons!

  • Basso Astra 2020 Bike Preview

Last month we brought you a preview of the all-new Basso Venta when we added it to our Girona rental bike fleet. Now, it’s the turn of the all-new Astra, which has undergone a similar update and also been made a part of our Girona bike hire cavalry. The Astra comes in at a higher spec than the Venta and according to Basso: “The all-new 2020 Astra pushes the limits farther than any version before it and does so with a good dose of style.” Let’s find out more…

Basso Astra 2020 Bike - About Basso - Eat Sleep Cycle

    About Basso Bikes

Founded in 1977 and based near Bassano del Grappa, Italy 50km northwest of Venice and less than 10km from the base of Monte Grappa, Basso have been making 100% Italian bikes for over 40 years. In their own words, the brand’s aim is to “put the product first, while always moving forward in terms of innovation, our technicians create with an extreme attention to detail, high precision and relentless perfectionism”, which sounds like a recipe for some pretty special bikes. Basso also work closely with another of our favourite brands, MAAP. The Australian brand, who design and make our beautiful Eat Sleep Cycle kit, worked with Basso to design a Diamante frame as well as running the MAAP/ Basso road team.

How Has the Basso Astra Been Improved?

Basso state that: “the latest version of the Astra model incorporates a great deal of technology that derives from its upper tier siblings and adopts a design that follows a tighter family feeling than ever before”. The new Astra benefits from aspects of the technology utilised within the pricier Diamante range. The frame is designed to be aero but not to such an exaggerated degree that it is rendered uncomfortable on long rides. The Astra has a larger head tube for increased solidity at the front, a near-horizontal top tube and chainstays that are designed for improved efficiency in power transfer.

Basso Astra 2020 Bike - Technical Info - Eat Sleep Cycle

    Basso Astra Technical Info

  • The All-New Basso Venta – Bike Preview

We love Italy. The culture, the food, the cycling and since working with Basso, the bikes! For the end of the 2019 season we are super excited to be introducing the newly re-designed Basso Venta to our rental fleet. The new Venta landed in the Hub this week and we can’t wait for our test-ride event, but until we get our hands on it, let’s take a more general look at Basso and the new Venta’s spec.

    Basso Bikes

The All-New Basso Venta - Basso Bikes

    The New Basso Venta

The Venta model is not new to Basso, however the brand has completely redesigned the bike for the 20th anniversary (it’s described as the venti venta, venti meaning 20 in Italian), making it lighter, more aero and trickling down technology and lessons learned from the high-end Diamante but with a much smaller price tag at €??. Available in both disc and rim, they describe the bike as one for “from the pro racer to the Sunday amateur” which is reflected in the more relaxed, but still relatively racey fit.

    Basso Venta Bike Specs

Now, onto the details that you need to know about the new Basso Venta bike – it’s a beauty!

    • Frame: Full carbon construction and no aluminium reinforced parts.
    • Tapered Headset: Headset and fork 1-1/8” to 1.5” for more rigidity.
    • 2 Fit: The frame can be used with both mechanical and electronic groupsets.
    • Tyres: The Venta comes spec’d with 28mm tyres and there is clearance for a few mm more.
